Welcome to 2008 and the many exciting things
happening at Highlands High School and your Alumni Association! It gives
me great pleasure to introduce you to the new, dynamic leadership team
of the Association: Elizabeth McDougal ’91, First Vice-President; Bill
Thomas ’65, Second Vice President and Immediate Past President; Barbara
Levine ’89, Secretary; Jack Mohr ’82, Treasurer. Also assisting on the
Board: Dave Freer ’71, Past President; Ed and Bev Harber ’66; Jackie and
Dick Thompson; and, Ken Honchell ’61.
I want to thank Bill Thomas for the many new and
creative enhancements he made in the past two years, including the newly
designed Over the Hilltopper, summer “gatherings” at Warner’s Restaurant
in Fort Thomas, and the first annual Alumni of the Year Dinner (this
year to be on Saturday, May 10th). The Board hopes to
continue to organize events to bring HHS alumni together. The
Association continues to award annual scholarships to HHS students.
We will continue to attempt to increase our alumni
membership base and share with you the exciting things happening at
Highlands and among your classmates. Plans are underway for the Second
Annual Alumni of the Year Dinner. We can use your help in selecting this
year’s recipient. If you would like to nominate someone, a nominate form
is included in the Newsletter. We are also starting to envision an
“Alumni Weekend” with events around a Bluebird football game, some
social opportunities, and a tour of the renovated Highlands. Stay tuned
for more on this.
Highlands High School and its great students
continue to receive accolades, both academically and athletically. The
High School was recently named a “Blue Ribbon” school, the only public
high school in Kentucky to receive this honor. The football team just
finished a perfect season with its 17th state title. We hope
to be able to share current news about Highlands in our publication.
Finally, Phase one of the major project/campaign
to renovate, rebuild, and restore our beloved Highlands is complete with
the exception of the state of the art Performing Arts Center which will
open in late February. Phase 1B has begun, and this phase includes the
complete renovation of the library area, to create a communication arts
center, complete with a mass communications area, writing lab,
journalism classroom, and theatre/studio. You have to see the amazing
progress to believe it, and I hope all of you will have the opportunity
soon. The Fort Thomas Education Foundation and the Campaign for
Highlands have raised $7.4 million so far for the renovation and will
continue to raise much needed dollars until the renovation is complete.
If you have not contributed yet please consider a generous gift to the
Campaign.
Alan Thomas ‘67
